Building a unified GIS system to support kaitiakitanga across the Kaipara

Ethos Environmental has partnered with Environs Te Uri o Hau to design and deliver a comprehensive GIS ecosystem for the Poipoia te Kākano programme. The system supports environmental restoration, cultural heritage protection, biodiversity monitoring, and community‑driven kaitiakitanga across the Kaipara.
Our work began with establishing a robust ArcGIS Online environment, configuring user access, and publishing the core spatial data structure. From there, we built an integrated suite of Field Maps, Survey123 forms, dashboards, and FME automation processes that now underpin field operations and decision‑making.
A major focus has been strengthening the trapping, baiting, monitoring, and device‑management workflows. This includes developing two‑way integration between ArcGIS Online and TrapNZ, implementing automated quality‑control processes, and creating one‑to‑many and one‑to‑one “most recent” datasets to ensure dashboards always reflect the latest field activity. These tools provide reliable, up‑to‑date information for operational planning and reporting.
We also developed specialised field solutions for archaeological sites, koiwi and midden records, kauri health and inoculation, and the full Wai app water‑monitoring workflow. This included rebuilding and publishing water‑monitoring feature services, updating schemas and domains, configuring SHMAK‑aligned Survey123 and Field Maps forms, adding related record tables for freshwater and marine monitoring, and extracting and restructuring the Taiao Ora sections from the original Wai app. We refined conditional visibility, calculations, symbology, and offline map areas to ensure accurate, efficient data capture in the field and reliable reporting through the Wai dashboard.
To support staff and contractors, we created a suite of mobile‑friendly dashboards covering trapping, baiting, monitoring, device scheduling, team tracking, and authoritative tracklogs. These dashboards provide real‑time visibility of progress, trends, and environmental outcomes, enabling informed decision‑making at both operational and strategic levels.
Through continuous refinement, testing, and user‑driven enhancements, the Poipoia te Kākano GIS platform has evolved into a scalable, future‑proof system that empowers Environs Te Uri o Hau to manage their whenua, taonga, and restoration efforts with clarity, accuracy, and confidence.
